1. Describe the stasis in the play: where, when, who, what, etc. in a paragraph.
This play is about a girl named Lil' Bit. It takes place in Maryland (and some parts of South Carolina) around the 1960's and 1970's. The age of Lil' Bit ranges from 11 to 18. The play has maultiple characters. Lil' Bit, Uncle Peck, her mother, grandmother, grandfater, Aunt Mary, and Lil' Bits classmates.
2. What is the intrusion?
When you discover that Uncle Peck is actually engaging in inapropiate activities with Lil' Bit. For me that was the major area of concern.
3. What is the unique factor?
Oddly I believe that is how Li'l Bit tells us about how she was abused by describing it in a manner of learning to drive. I understand they both occured at the same time, but i think she uses it as a coping mechanism.
4. What is the dramatic question that should be answered by the end of the play?
I personally want to know what happened to Uncle Peck as a kid to cause this in him. This type of behavior does not just pop up and I think that its relevant to note that here. This is also asked by Li'l Bit at the end of the play, and amazing ending question and final line.
5. Provide an illustration of the two kinds of exposition that the play has in it.
One kind of Exposition is how Uncle Pecks wife allowed this to happen while KNOWING something was going on. Later in the play we find out why this is. We can also relate to the closeness of the two (Uncle Peck and Li'l Bit). as the play progresses. From our point of view we know why they're so close, but from the families point of view they do not.
6. Identify the most theatrical moment in the play and of what importance it seems to be.
Easily this is how we find out that there wasn't any consent between the two people and that the Uncle was, in fact taking advantage of an 11 year old girl.
7. List some of the themes of the play.
sexual abuse, addictions, betrayal, innocence, survival, growing up.
8. Choose the character of Li'l Bit in the show and articulate what she wants and what are some obstacles that stand in the way of her getting what she wants?
Well let's do Li'l Bit. In the start of the play, the acceptance of her relationship with her uncle is apparent, or so it seems. He seems to give her multiple avenues to explore and she takes that to the advantage to get him away from his addictions. Once she's gone she realizes that her relationship may not be actually be accepted or even right as it is. To get around this obstacle she needs to end and so she does. One last obstacle she cannot overcome is finding out how her uncle was abused, or if he was at all.
9. Describe some possible images in the play and how does the title help us understand the play.
The Keys. They're the cover the uncle uses as "driving lessons" to instead molest the main character. They also signify everything she went through . The Champagne is another thing because it signifies the one constant in the uncles life that eventually made him fall.
10. Briefly define the family relationships that are examined in the play.
Li'l Bits closest thing to a dad is her Uncle since hers has left. The family issues with Li'l Bits early development also speaks words becasue it shows how broken the family was. Or perhaps dysfunctional is a better term.
